This show marks the genesis of a new technique involving the use of calligraphy with Tatami matting, which was traditionally made from woven straw and has always been integral to the life and culture of the Japanese people. Throughout the Muromachi period and the Sengoku period, Tatami was regarded as a cultural staple of the traditional tea ceremony etiquette which has come to define Japanese sensibility and hospitality. Today, a new 21st century Tatami is being developed using technology and traditional handcrafts to combine Tatami straw with paper and as a result, a new opportunity for expression has been born of the combination of two ancient pillars of Japanese culture, Tatami and calligraphy. In that moment, a new sense of values is born by one line combining with another on the Tatami and Kototama riding the stroke. Sugita Koki would like you to feel the soul which the Japanese people have inherited.
